in the statement by the nra earlier this week. president obama weighed in with a web address on the topic this morning. >> if we're going to succeed it's going to take a sustained effort from mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, law enforcement and responsible gun owners organizing, speaking up, calling their members of congress as many times as it takes, standing up and saying, enough on behalf of all of our kids. >> nbc national investigative correspondent michael isikoff joins me now from the site of the nra press briefing. mike, what do we expect to hear from wayne laperriere? obviously a very sort of brief statement released earlier in the week. any indication what he is going to say and how? >> well, i think we got one indication just a few moments ago when david keen the president of the nra came out and asked everybody assembled to join in that moment of silence for the victims of newtown. i think that is a recognition that the nra realizes that this is a major moment in which the public is engaged on this issue in a way it never has before. the specter of innocent children be

a conservative republican who received the nra's highest ratings over four terms in congress. i saw this debate over guns as a powerful symbolic struggle between individual rights and government control. and you know what? in the years after waco and ruby ridge, the symbolism of that debate seemed even more powerful to me. but the symbols of that ideological struggle, they've been shattered by the harvest's own from violent, mind-numbing video games and gruesome hollywood movies that dangerously desensitize those who struggle with mental health challenges. and then add in military-styled weapons and high-capacity magazines to that equation, and tragedy can never be too far behind. you know, there's no easy ideological way forward. if it were only that simple as to blame hollywood or the nra or insufficient funding for mental health, then our task would be completed in no time. but i come to you this morning with a heavy heart and no easy answers. still, i've spent the past few days grasping for solutions and struggling for answers. while daring to question my own long-held belief on these subje

statement since the massacre. james rosen live in washington with that. james? >> good evening. the nra broke its silence a few hours after fox news reported exclusively that the gun advocacy group was soon going to begin, quote, pushing back against the gun control lobby which has been quite vocal since newtown. the nra statement promised to hold a major news conference this friday. the national rifle association of america, the statement said, is made up of 4 million moms and dads, sons and daughters and we were shocked, saddened and heart broken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in newtown. the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. around senator feinstein, the democrat who proposes to ban more than 100 kinds of firearms, the nra is preparing to draw red lines, a key provision in the feinstein bill would limit the number of rounds that could be loaded into semiautomatic weapons. and industry sources say that would prove very expensive to gun manufacturers. senator manchin, the gun friendly democrat from virginia

television right now, they don't want to come on. they're hiding away, as are members of the nra and all the usual suspects when these terrible things happen. are you detecting, senator, that there is change in mood? are you hoping this is a tipping point? >> yes, i hope so, piers. i had to do a brief segment on "meet the press" yesterday morning. and afterwards, i probably got 20 phone calls at home here in washington. very unusual, people from washington and california calling and saying we want to help with this. it's got to stop. i even had one man who was a member of the nra who said i have an ar-15, and i'm going to get rid of it. i'm a hunter, and i want you to do something about these assault weapons. so i'm going to do my level best to try. i did it once before in 1993. we sat down and we wrote a bill, and that bill passed the senate. chuck schumer introduced it in the house. it passed. it was not amended. it was passed. and it went to the president. president clinton signed it, and it was the law for ten years. and over time, it began to wind down the supply of these weapons. a
that. >> how do you actually deal with that powerful lobby, the nra, the nra now saying that they are not yet in the debate. they'll comment with had they get all the information from this latest massacre. but we've already had some indications, congressman manchin who says, look, perhaps i will go ahead and suggest to my nra friends that they need to engage and need to take a different approach. is this the moment that that is even possible? >> i hope so because what i hope that we will do is now we'll start looking at facts rather than, you know, emotions. the time for emotions remains with regard to this horrific tragedy, but let's translate into action. and the action depends on facts. why do we have 15 times as much gun homicide as the rest of the world? what can we do about it? what can we learn from other countries that have dealt with some of these issues? why do countries like japan have these extraordinarily low rates of gun home skpooicide and gun ? if we can come up with something sensible -- and frankly, if has to be more far reaching. even the legislation p
the nra to the table in a very sort of high pressure timetable right now? >> reporter: this struck me because when the president was asked about this during questioning, he said that he has faith basically in members of the nra. so making it clear that he's going to be trying to appeal to actual members as mothers and fathers, that he said when you look at the nra, there are a lot of people there who want to be sure that people go through background checks, they want to make sure that kids are safe. he thinks that there is sort of a place where nra members don't want to see military style weapons in the hands of people, a period or might do harm. that was sort of where he was looking and using the bully pulpit. friday, we'll be hearing from the nra for first time. they have been saying no comment. they have remained mum following the shooting in connecticut on friday. but this is just a really a sign now that things are very much heating up here, that we will be hearing from them on friday and that we heard from the president getting specific today, brooke. >> nra releasing a statemen
with the coalition of gun owners, we used a republican pollster to poll gun owners and nra members, you get from 70 to 90%, depending on the common sense issue we could do that would make our country safer. let me give you one example. roughly 40% of the guns sold in america are sold in what's called the secondary market, in other words, private sales. where there's no federal registration at all, where people with criminal backgrounds, where you could get somebody on the terrorist, no-fly list who can't get on a plane, but could go to the secondary market and buy weapons. overwhelmingly 84% of gun owners -- 82% of gun owners in america believe that should change. changing that alone makes a difference. i'll give you the specific example how. up with out of two women that are murdered with a gun are murdered by someone they know well. in states that don't allow people to trade in private gun sales or gun shows and the like, that number drops by 40%, because the people with the intention to do wrong, or who have a misdemeanor dofl abuse can't buy guns in america, makes people safer. >> you have had
the connecticut shootings. in fact, the nra's facebook page was taken down a day after it boasted reaching 1.7 million likes. >> i was watching some of the sunday shows and there was one program where they said they invited 31 pro-gun right senators on the show to be part of the panel discussion and not a single one accepted the invitation. >> that's remarkable to me. >> it is. >> typically, the reaction when something like this happens is well, if there were more guns, then this type of thing wouldn't happen. so for example, if the security guard at the school had a gun, this wouldn't have happened. if the teachers had guns, this wouldn't have happened. so i'm surprised the nra has been so silent. these gun enthusiasenthusiasts, surprised they have been silent. >> i think they know all the pro gun rights that obviously for clear reasons, emotions are raw right now. tempers are high, frustration is high. and so they're laying low. but the thing is, the president made it very clear. some legislation is coming. whether it succeeds or not is a different story. >> senator dianne feinstein intend
